Three Brush Lettering Tips to Improve Your Skills

Brush lettering is relaxing, creative, and endlessly satisfying — but if you’re just starting out (or even if you’ve been practicing for a while), a few simple tips can make a huge difference. Here are my three favourite brush lettering tips to help you create smoother, more confident strokes.
1. Master Your Basic Strokes
Before jumping into full letters and words, spend time practicing the fundamental strokes: upstrokes, downstrokes, and curves.
-
Upstrokes should be light and thin.
-
Downstrokes should be heavier and thicker.
Practicing these basic movements regularly builds muscle memory and makes your letters look more consistent and flowing.
Tip: Use a practice sheet with traceable strokes to get started — it’s a simple way to build confidence.
2. Don’t Press Too Hard
One of the most common mistakes I see is pressing too hard on the pen, especially on upstrokes. Brush lettering is about contrast: light upstrokes, bold downstrokes.
-
Hold your pen lightly.
-
Let the pen tip glide across the paper.
-
Think flow instead of force.
This will prevent fraying your brush pen tips and give your letters a natural, graceful look.
3. Take Breaks and Enjoy the Process
Brush lettering is as much about mindfulness as it is about creating beautiful letters. Don’t rush.
-
Take short breaks if your hand gets tired.
-
Step back and admire your progress.
-
Enjoy the process, not just the end result.
The more relaxed you are, the better your letters will look — and the more fun you’ll have!
