My Go-To Brush Lettering Tools for Beginners (Everything You Actually Need)

If you’re just starting your brush lettering journey, it can feel overwhelming knowing what tools to buy. The truth is you don’t need loads to get started.

These are the exact tools I use in my workshops and for my own lettering practice. Simple, reliable, and perfect for beginners.

1. My Favourite Brush Pen

The most important tool you’ll need is a good quality brush pen. I always recommend starting with something that gives you control but still allows for those beautiful thick and thin strokes.

This is the pen I use in all of my workshops. It’s super versatile, beginner-friendly, and gives a really smooth finish.

2. The Right Paper (This Makes a HUGE Difference)

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is using the wrong paper. Standard printer paper can damage your brush pen and make lettering feel harder than it needs to be.

Look for paper that is smooth and bleed-resistant—this will help your pen glide and last longer.

3. A Simple Pencil

Before jumping straight into pen, I always recommend sketching lightly in pencil first—especially when planning layouts or practicing spacing.

4. Practice Sheets (This Is Where Progress Happens)

This is where the magic happens. Having structured practice sheets makes a huge difference when you’re learning brush lettering.

My Honest Advice (Start Simple)

You really don’t need loads of tools to begin. A pen, the right paper, and consistent practice will take you so much further than buying everything at once.

Focus on:

  • Practicing little and often
  • Getting comfortable with strokes
  • Enjoying the process
